"Turtle is based on the myth of the world turtle, that is the world being on the back of a turtle. It has come up in many cultures around the world, perhaps because a turtle shell so easily lends itself to that comparison. With the sea turtle as such a potent symbol, especially at the time I was painting it (during the oil spill), the idea of the sea turtle being affected by the world while also representing the world itself seems powerful, as we are of course all connected."
